Where Do I Start?

This is probably the #1 question I get asked: "Where do I start?"

Answer is there really isn't a right answer, YOU JUST START.

It's one box, and one item at a time.

As far as strategy goes, my favorite approach is:

  • Categorize

  • Purge

  • Organize

In this project I created a "categorizing room". This room was in a total separate area of the house and in this room I had different bins for each category. I had about 7 different bins: Electronics, Receipts, Personal Paperwork, Work Paperwork, Memorabilia, and Home Decor.

I took one box with me at a time to the "categorizing room" and categorized each item. I repeated this process until there were no more boxes left. Taking one box at a time to a different area keeps me from becoming overwhelmed by seeing so many boxes at once.

Once everything was categorized, I sat with my client and let the purging process begin. Purging can be overwhelming, so always make sure your client is comfortable and has their favorite Starbucks drink handy. During this process I brought out small stacks at a time to a separate area to ensure they didn't get overwhelmed by seeing everything at once.

Once we decided what items were staying and what items were being donated, I began the organizing process. I took each categorized bin and created a home for each and every item.

It's really that easy. It's all about just starting the process and taking small steps to the finish line.
